STYX, the band responsible for some of the most memorable rock music of the 1970s and 1980s, will come to Five Flags for the first time ever this summer to be a part of Dubuque's annual Independence Day celebration. The concert will begin earlier than usual so attendees have time afterwards to get into viewing position for the annual fireworks extravaganza over the Mississippi River.

The six men comprising Styx have committed to rocking audiences far and wide by entering their second decade of averaging more than 100 shows a year, and each is committed to making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from more than four decades of barn-burning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones.

Originally formed in 1972, Styx hit its stride with guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s first LP with the band, 1976’s Crystal Ball, which included the Top 40 hit “Mademoiselle.” The group then became the first group to score four triple-platinum albums in a row: The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979), and Paradise Theater (1981). Over the ensuing decade, Styx weathered the shifting winds of the public’s musical taste, reconvening for a highly successful 1996 Return to Paradise tour.

has continued to receive praise for its live performances into the 21st century. On the 2006 live album One With Everything, they joined Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra to create a hybrid orchestral rock blend for the ages. The band performed at its peak in tackling every track of two of their finest platinum-selling albums on 2011’s The Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight Live. Styx also re-recorded two full discs of classic material for the aptly-titled Regeneration Volume I & II, released in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

The current lineup of STYX – Shaw, Ricky Phillips (bass/vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums), Lawrence Gowan (keyboard/vocals), Chuck Panozzo (bass), and James “JY” Young (guitar/vocals) – is looking forward to performing as many shows as long as it can. Welcome to The Grand Evolution!
